How to Choose LED Strip Lights for Your Bedroom or Living Room
By Luminoa · 2 October 2026 · 3 min read
LED strip lights are probably the quickest way to transform a room: a few metres tucked behind a piece of furniture create indirect light that changes everything. But with so many lengths, LED types and control options, it is easy to get it wrong. Here is what to check before you buy.
1. Measure before you pick a length
The most common mistake is buying a strip on guesswork. Grab a tape measure and note exactly where the light will go:
- Headboard: the width of the bed, plus 10 to 20 cm on each side for a wider glow
- TV unit: the outline of the back of the screen or the length of the unit
- Ceiling or coving: the full perimeter of the room
Always allow a little extra. Most strips can be cut every 3 LEDs, along lines marked with a scissor icon, so you can trim to the exact length as you fit it. For a typical bedroom, a 5 m strip is often enough; to go around a living room, start with 10 m.
2. RGB, tunable white or RGBIC: what is the difference?
Not all colour LEDs are created equal. Here is how to tell them apart:
- RGB: one colour at a time along the whole strip. It is the most common type and ideal for a single-colour ambience.
- RGBW or tunable white: a dedicated white chip is added to the colours for a true white, which works better as everyday accent lighting.
- RGBIC: each segment can show a different colour, so you get rainbow effects and moving gradients.
If what you are after is coloured mood lighting behind furniture, a standard RGB strip does the job perfectly.
3. LED density and brightness
Density is measured in LEDs per metre. At 30 LEDs per metre, the light is plenty for indirect lighting hidden behind furniture or a headboard. If the strip will be in plain sight, go for 60 LEDs per metre or add an aluminium channel with a diffuser to avoid the "row of dots" effect.
One simple rule: the better hidden the strip, the less density matters.
4. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or remote?
How you control your lights makes a big difference day to day:
- Infrared remote: simple and instant, but you need to point it at the controller.
- Bluetooth: control from your phone with no setup, but only within a few metres.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: control from anywhere, schedules and voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant.
Bear in mind that most smart strips only work on 2.4 GHz. If your router broadcasts a single network that combines both bands, split them or temporarily switch off 5 GHz while pairing.
5. The power supply matters more than you think
A strip powered by the USB port on your TV is handy behind a screen, but it is limited in power. For longer runs, a 12 V mains adapter is a must. Avoid joining several strips end to end beyond the length the manufacturer recommends: brightness drops towards the end of the run and colours become uneven.
6. Prepare the surface properly
Careful fitting keeps the adhesive in place for years:
- Degrease the surface with a cloth and a little rubbing alcohol.
- Plug in and test the strip before peeling off the backing.
- Never fold the strip into a sharp corner: use a connector or form a gentle loop.
- On matte paint or wallpaper, add a few mounting clips.
Our picks to get you started
For a bedroom or living room, the smart RGB LED strip lights (10 m) tick every box: two 5 m reels, 300 LEDs, a Wi-Fi app, a remote and music mode. Want to go further? The hexagon LED wall panels create a real focal point on the wall, and smart bulbs bring the rest of your existing lamps into the same setup. Choose the right length and the right control, and your LED strip will quickly become the favourite light in the house.
